2014 Here I Come!!!

downloadHow better to kick off the new year than with a 10k race!  After an awesome evening hanging out with new friends and running buddies on New Years eve, I ushered in the new year, 2014, with a bright shiny 10k race, the Atlanta Track Club sponsored Resolution run.

1551462_630077690374021_1814388446_nOne of my biggest goals for this year centers on increasing my overall speed and ability as a runner.  As I mentioned in my final post for 2013, I have big running goals for 2014, starting with a 15k race followed by three half marathons leading into the start of my triathlons for the new year.  What better way to kick off this goal than a 10k run on New Years day.

The race itself was pretty much an uneventful set of loops, winding through office park roads  in a northern suburb of Atlanta.  The course had numerous long uphills paired with an equal number of downhills.  Of course the event was sponsored by the Atlanta Track Club which always does a wonderful job of hosting running races.  While the scenery was uninspiring, the overall course was not too hard or easy.

Time wise I finished this race in an official chip time of 1:27:40.  I have only ran one 10k before and that took me only ten seconds or so more time than this one did, a few months later.  On my first 10k back in the summer of 2013 I felt exhausted midway and did not have good control over pacing and timing.   This time I felt calm and much better at self pacing.  In the feel department this felt much easier than the last time I ran a 10k.  I am a bit disappointed that my finish time pretty much mimicked my earlier 10k time.  Besides feeling in better control, I figured half marathons and 15k distance races would have lead to some improvement.

New Year... New haircut! Do you think it makes me more aero?

New Year… New haircut! Do you think it makes me more aero?

The lack of improvement has me bummed a bit.  Of course I have just started a new running program that has lead me to completing my first back to back 20 mile running weeks ever.  I just started this program  with my chief goal to improve my running time and capabilities so for now I am going to stick it out and keep with the current program.  After three half marathons and a couple of 5k races I should be able to gauge my progress and hopefully see some improvement in my running.  Time will tell and I have a plan scheduled out that I just need to give some time to see if it leads to results.

Overall a great way to kick off 2014! Til next time.
